There are some bands that, despite being from other places, are just so Missoula. There are a few genres that capture the vibe of this city, bluegrass on a traditional level, that's the roots. There's also something about synthwave which is newer but resembles Missoula in its dreaminess, so chill and mellow like people from here tend to be. Though if I had to pick just one genre as what feels the most Missoulian, it would definitely be the wild yet refined, sensitive yet driven musical style known as indie rock. That's what you get when you listen to bands like Pixies and Modest Mouse, which is why the announcement was only made this morning and yet I'm already feeling the buzz and excitement for it.

Pixies and Modest Mouse are playing at the KettleHouse Amphitheater on September 7th and tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am, here's the event page for details. To me that's the perfect venue to see these bands, and at the perfect time of year, still summer but not as consistently hot as July or August.

Modest Mouse played at The Wilma just last November, but after asking around and doing a thorough search of Google I can say I'm fairly certain Pixies have never played in Montana, which makes this show that much more special. Years ago I was at a kickback with fellow Griz students and we were mostly strangers, but we all managed to know the lyrics to Where Is My Mind, so this announcement is cool for me on a personal level. Indie-rock on, Missoula.
