Morrissey Cuts Show Short Due to Vocal Issues
Morrissey's life on the road has seemed like one long public relations nightmare lately, with aborted shows and canceled dates attracting more attention than the music. That bad luck streak continued during his April 10 stop in Tucson, Ariz., after he exited the stage six songs into his set and never returned.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that the singer's premature departure — fan-shot footage of which can be streamed above — was prefaced by Morrissey telling the crowd that he'd "left half my mouth in Guadalajara" but promised to "stand here and I will sing, and, if necessary, I will drop dead."
Ultimately deciding he couldn't carry on after all, Morrissey cut the show short after roughly 30 minutes, with keyboardist Gustavo Manzur — whose own health issues prompted the cancellation of a string of recent dates — telling the audience, "His voice is shot. You heard it, you heard it. He’s been trying, trying really hard. He came out, he tried. His voice is really shot. We’re sorry. He’s sorry. You know he tried."
"Obviously this was out of our control," the venue's executive director pointed out in a message to patrons. Promising that efforts are already underway to try and reschedule the show, he added, "We appreciate your patience while we are negotiating with Morrissey’s management team."
As of this writing, it's unknown what impact — if any — Morrissey's health will have on future dates. His currently scheduled concert engagements include a stop tonight (April 12) in San Antonio, with shows to follow in Houston on April 14 and Dallas the following night.
