A University of Montana student was assaulted late Thursday night on the UM campus by an unknown assailant who is still at large.

Lt. Brad Giffin with the University of Montana Police department described the assault.

“A male individual was walking with two of his friends in that concourse area behind Washington Grizzly Stadium,” said Giffin. “He was delayed and his friends went to the bottom of the concourse and he lost sight of them. He was then grabbed from behind by a male who tackled him and dragged him into one of those little door enclaves and held onto him until he was able to punch at him to get him to let him go.”

Giffin said the victim was able to provide a brief description of his assailant.

“The description that he gave us was that of a white male, about five feet ten inches tall with a medium build, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a stocking-type mask and gloves.”

Giffin said an alert was sent out for the entire campus to be aware of the assault.

“This wasn’t a Clery Act crime, but it was concerning enough because university students walk a lot, so it’s our responsibility under the law and to our students and the faculty to make sure they are as safe as they can be, so we put out a Timely Warning’,” he said. “These are for events that have already occurred, but still to us present a danger to our campus communities.”

Giffin emphasized the fact that the victim was frightened by the attack but was not injured, and that the suspect is still at large.

Anyone with information about the assailant is asked to contact 9-1-1 or the University of Montana Police Department.,
