On June 5, 2022, a Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Deputy observed a black Ford Escape driving on the Reserve Street off ramp and approaching the intersection of West Broadway at a high rate of speed. There was a sedan already stopped at the red light and the Ford Escape stopped unusually fast and abruptly. Due to the rain and wet road conditions, the deputy gave the driver of the Ford Escape the benefit of the doubt on the unusual stop.

The sedan and Ford Escape continued westbound on West Broadway and the deputy followed. The Ford Escape was in the left lane and going at a higher rate of speed than the sedan. It appeared that the Ford Escape was going to pass the sedan but it then suddenly pulled into the right lane behind the sedan and decreased its speed. The Ford Escape then suddenly jerked back into the left lane, overcorrected, weaved right, and almost hit the rear end of the sedan as it passed.

At that time, the deputy initiated a traffic stop. He approached the vehicle on the passenger side and observed the driver staring forward. Immediately, the deputy smelled the odor of alcohol emitting from inside of the vehicle. The driver's eyes were glossy and he had a dazed facial expression. The driver identified himself as 64-year-old Jacobus Odyk.

The deputy asked him how much alcohol he had to drink tonight and he advised that he had consumed two Bud light 12oz bottles approximately one hour prior to driving. Dispatch informed the deputy that Odyk did not have a valid driver's license and had four prior convictions for DUI.

The deputy requested that Odyk get out and perform standard field sobriety tests and Odyk complied. Odyk had 13 out of 18 clues of impairment. Odyk was read the PAST advisory and gave a PBT sample of .0159 BAC.

Odyk is currently being charged with felony DUI, which is a fourth or subsequent offense.
