The YMCA is celebrating their 50th year in Missoula on Friday, September 8 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Director of Development and Outreach Julie Hofbauer explains how the YMCA got started.

“The community needed something like a YMCA,” said Hofbauer. “It is a safe place for kids to grow up, familes to come and work out and senior citizens to find healthy workout classes as well. We started in a shack, a quonset type hut that still sits on the YMCA’s property and is now used as our child care center.”

Hofbauer says most of the event activities are scheduled to take place outside, but the smoke in the air may cause the YMCA to move some things around.

“It is going to be a big carnival,” Hofbauer said. “There are going to be carnival games and a bounce house. There might be some talk about moving the bounce house and all that stuff inside. We do have the space. We do welcome the community to come inside just because the air quality is yucky outside. People need a place to come in and get out of the smoke.”

According to Hofbauer, the event on Friday is free to the public and the YMCA welcomes anyone to come by and have some fun.
