There will be an International Virtual press conference and Congressional briefing on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Mountain time where tech companies will demonstrate how to prevent hot car deaths of children.

Safe Kids Montana Administrator Kira Huck pointed to legislation passed recently that would help prevent hot car deaths.

“On July first there was a bill passed in the House of Representatives, and as part of that bill it included the Hot Cars Act which calls for safety standards requiring technology in all new vehicles,” said Huck. “This technology would help detect the presence of a child within the car and then as part of that it would provide audio and visual warnings inside and outside the vehicle.”

Huck described the virtual press conference scheduled for Tuesday morning.

“Kids in Cars is hosting a virtual press conference tomorrow at noon Eastern and 10:00 a.m. Mountain time,” she said. “I do believe it will be open to the public. What it’s going to do is it will give an overview of those requirements and the technology that is available currently. It will talk about that bill a little more and how that can help prevent these tragedies.”

Huck said until the new technology is available in all vehicles, Safe Kids Missoula has some tips to keep children from being left alone in hot cars.

“We have an acronym we like to share and it is simply A C T,” she said. “The ‘A’ stands for avoid heatstroke by never leaving the child alone in the car, not even for a minute. The ‘C’ stands for create reminders. Maybe you can put your purse or your cell phone in the back seat to remind you to look there before you exit your vehicle. The ‘T’ is for take action. That’s really for everybody. If you see a child alone in a car, please call 9-1-1 immediately.”

This information is important, since temperatures in western Montana will be in the upper 90’s throughout the week.
