Wonderful Wonderful, the fifth studio album from The Killers isn't even two years old yet, but the band has already come through with new music, though a 2019 record does not seem likely for the alt rockers. For now, the emotive "Land of the Free," a standalone single aimed at current social and political events, has been released.

"I think it is a very important time right now and 'enough is enough' was basically where it comes from," frontman Brandon Flowers began explaining to Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe in a recent interview. "It started in my mind around when Sandy Hook happened and as a father, how that affected me, and then it just started stacking up. It was things like Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, things like what's happening at the wall," he continued.

Flowers went on, detailing, "You know this stuff just didn't seem to be in harmony with the values that I believe my country was founded on. I would start the song and then I would put it away and say, 'I'm not the guy to do this.' Or I would feel inadequate, waiting for ... Somebody's going to write this song. And then it just piled up and I finally just, you know, Las Vegas, Orlando, Parkland and it just kept coming. It was just like I've gotta, have to get this out."

Listen to "Land of the Free" and read the lyrics below.

[Verse 1]
Can't wipe the wind-blown smile from across my face
It's just the old man in me
Washing his truck at the Sinclair station
In the land of the free
His mother Adeline's family came on a ship
Cut coal and planted a seed
Down in them drift mines of Pennsylvania
In the land of the free

[Chorus]
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
(I'm standing crying)

[Verse 2]
When I go out in my car, I don't think twice
But if you're the wrong color skin (I'm standing crying)
You grow up looking over both your shoulders
In the land of the free
We got more people locked up than the rest of the world
Right here in red, white and blue
Incarceration's become big business
It's harvest time out on the avenue

[Chorus]
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Move on there's nothing too see
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free

[Bridge]
I'm standing crying, I'm standing crying
So how many daughters, tell me how many sons
Do we have to have to put in the ground before we just break down and face it
We got a problem with guns
In the land of the free
Down at the border, they're gonna put up a wall
Concrete and rebar steel beams (I'm standing crying)
High enough to keep all those filthy hands off of our hopes and our dreams (I'm standing crying)
People who just want the same things we do
In the land of the free

[Chorus]
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, in the land of the free
(I'm standing crying)

Previewing what's on the horizon for The Killers and new music, Flowers said, "Oh, I mean, in a perfect world, I could see the end of the year having something, but I think it's probably, it's looking more likely that it would be early 2020."
