Yesterday, we learned that Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell tragically took his own life late Thursday night (May 17). The news sent a shockwave throughout the rock and metal community with countless musicians paying tribute to the icon on social media. Now, the musical tributes have begun as Stone Sour covered "Outshined" at the Rock on the Range Kick-Off Party at the Express Live theater in downtown Columbus, Ohio, a short drive from where the big festival would be taking place the next day.

"We lost a rock 'n' roll brother today. As you know, we lost Chris Cornell from Soundgarden today, sadly," began Corey Taylor. "He was one of my favorite singers, he was one of my favorite f--king all time songwriters and the fact that he is gone makes this world a little bit smaller. So one time, make some f--king noise for Chris Cornell," he continued, which was met with a roar of applause from the festival crowd.

The singer recalled a personal experience, stating, "I had the pleasure of hanging out with him and he was honestly one of the coolest motherf--kers I had ever met in my f--king life, so we decided that we were going to pay a little tribute to Mr. Cornell tonight." Taylor went on, "We learned this song today. In fact, I'm not completely sure we've learned it, but God damn it, we're going to give it our f--king best; I'm going to give my best. I'm no Chris Cornell, but God damn it, if you know the words, you f--king help us sing it. Are you ready?"

Stone Sour then tore into the familiar, chunky riff from the Badmotorfinger cut, settling into the groove as Taylor, as he prefaced, did his best to honor Cornell. The cover suits his voice well, which is no surprise given the overwhelming influence Cornell's music had on Taylor throughout the '90s. Holding out the mic to the crowd during the chorus as the song neared the end, the festival crowd belted out the refrain in one of what is sure to be many moving moments at Rock on the Range this weekend, where Soundgarden were slated to headline.

In addition to the Soundgarden cover, Stone Sour also performed the live debuts of the new Hydrograd singles "Song #3" and "Fabuless." See our exclusive photos from the show below.

Last night (May 17), Megadeth also learned "Outshined" and played the track at their concert in Tokyo. “We have lost one of the most beautiful voices in rock history and I don’t even know what to say other than that we’re going to dedicate this next song to you, our friends in Tokyo, because we’re here with you and we want to celebrate Chris’ life," said Dave Mustaine before starting up the song.
