The days of September 22 and 23 will be this year's early waterfowl hunt for youth in Montana no older than the age of 15. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks allows licensed youth to hunt ducks, geese, coots, mergansers and ring-necked pheasants statewide on those two days only. The youth must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.

The rules are set out on the Montana FWP website. The adult may not shoot, however, they can assist with setting decoys, calling and retrieving. The youth aged 12 to 15 must be legally licensed and have completed hunter education classes. The non-hunting adult must be at least 18 years old. The other youth allowed are certified and licensed "apprentice" hunters of age 10 to 15. Their non-hunting "mentor" adult must be at least 21 years old. Hunting hours for these two days will be a half hour before sunrise to noon. Remember to ask permission when hunting on private land. The general waterfowl hunting season opens September 29 and opens October 6 for pheasants.
