An unidentified adult male who appeared to be in his 30's was struck and killed at the corner of Reserve and South Avenue in Missoula as he was attempting to cross the street.

Police spokesman Travis Welsh said the 9-1-1 call came in at about 4:40 on Thursday morning.

"Officers responded to the report of a collision at the corner of Reserve and South Avenue involving a vehicle and a pedestrian,” Welsh began. “When they arrived, they learned that a pedestrian crossing Reserve Street at South Avenue was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Reserve, and that in fact the pedestrian was deceased at the scene.”

Welsh said the investigation took several hours, and the northbound lanes of Reserve were blocked until just after 9:00 a.m.

“An investigation is underway with assistance from the Montana Highway Patrol to actually map the scene,” he said. “The Missoula County Coroner’s Office was also involved. We are currently conducting interviews with witnesses, and with the driver involved who is cooperating in the investigation and helping us out however he can.  At this point there are no charges pending, and the investigation is ongoing.”

Welsh said witnesses at the scene recognized the victim and identified him to authorities, however, his name will not be released until his family can be notified.
