Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds colleague Warren Ellis have released their instrumental track ‘War Machine,’ which appears on the soundtrack for the Netflix movie of the same name, starring Brad Pitt. Hear it below.

War Machine is a dark comedy described as “an absurdist war story for our times.” Also starring Tilda SwintonTopher Grace and Sir Ben Kingsley, it tells the story of General McMahon – played by Pitt – who finds himself “caught up in a modern war machine that keeps on churning, seemingly to no end.” He takes command of NATO forces in Afghanistan and tries to lead in a “rockstar” style, only to fall foul of a journalist (Swinton) who’s out to reveal the truth.

Cave and Ellis said in a statement: “Together we made a score that was both light and dark, propulsive and meditative at the same time. We developed a kind of ‘spiritual electronics’ that captured both the melancholy and terrible absurdity of the Afghan war. It was a great pleasure to work with David Michod, who is not only an extraordinary filmmaker, but a musician too. Our favorite score!”

Cave and the Bad Seeds released 16th album The Skeleton Tree last year. It was accompanied by a documentary, One More Time With Feeling, which explored Cave’s struggle to continue working after the death of his teenage son in 2015. The band tour the U.S. starting at the end of this month.
