On May 1, 2022, at approximately 12:01 a.m., Missoula Police Department Officers responded to Mullan Station after receiving reports that one male assaulted another male with brass knuckles. The suspect, Jeffrey Adams, had caused a prior disturbance in that location by attempting to fight people and reaching for something in his pocket.

When an officer arrived, he immediately located Adams standing near a bicycle. Adams was bleeding profusely from his hands. After being advised of his rights, Adams stated that he was riding his bike when a random male punched him, causing him to fall off his bike. Adams said the male attempted to choke him, so he fought back in self-defense.

Meanwhile, another officer made contact with the victim. The victim’s mouth was actively bleeding and his bottom row of teeth were broken. The victim was in extreme pain and had difficulty talking. However, he managed to communicate that he had been punched in the face with brass knuckles. He was then transported to the hospital. There, he spoke with the officer again. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold picks up the story.

“A male watched the suspect, who was identified as Jeffrey Adams, from a casino window and it appeared Adams was attempting to steal his bike,” Arnold said. “The victim knocked on the window to get Adams’ attention. Adams initially put the bike down, but then picked it back up. The victim went outside. When the victim went outside, he observed Adams, who he did not know, had brass knuckles on his hand.”

According to court documents, Adams shoved the victim and the victim fell to the ground. Adams then punched the victim in the mouth with the brass knuckles, breaking the victim’s teeth. Adams punched the victim multiple additional times in the face and knee’d the victim in the back.

“Adams physically attacked the victim,” Arnold said. “The attack was unprovoked and Adams caused physical injuries. Fire and medical were also dispatched to the scene. There are no updates on the victim’s condition. Multiple officers on scene were able to speak to witnesses and collect evidence of the reported crime. The witnesses were able to provide very detailed statements of what they had observed. Adams was arrested and taken to the Missoula County Detention Center.”

One witness said she saw Adams holding brass knuckles. She told him to drop the weapon and then she began to provide medical aid to the victim. Another witness said Adams approached him holding brass knuckles. He yelled at Adams to stop, and Adams complied. Adams sat down for a short time and then walked over to the bicycle he had been tampering with. Law enforcement arrived at that time.

An officer attempted to locate the brass knuckles because they were not on Adams’ person. The officer discovered a set of silver brass knuckles at the bottom of a nearby ash tray. They appeared to be covered in blood. The officer showed Adams what he had found, but Adams again denied ownership.

Adams is currently being charged with felony robbery and felony assault with a weapon.
