On May 20, 2022, Missoula County Detention Officers responded to a report of a disturbance inside one of the cells. When Detention Officers responded, they opened the cell door and observed 36-year-old Douglas Skoczek and another male standing a few feet away from each other. An officer placed handcuffs on the other male and escorted him to the Medical Unit. Officers noted that the male had a gash on his right hand, scratches on his neck and left ear, and an eye injury.

On May 21, 2022, a Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Deputy responded to the Missoula County Detention Facility to investigate the alleged assault. While reading the reports from Detention Officers, it was readily apparent to the deputy that Skoczek was the primary aggressor in the altercation.

The deputy went to obtain statements from Skoczek and the male victim, but Skoczek refused to speak with the deputy about the incident. The victim, however, stated that he would like to speak to law enforcement.

The victim stated he was cell mates with Skoczek and that he and Skoczek had a tablet in their cell that they could share. At some point earlier in the day, the victim had let an inmate upstairs borrow the tablet. The inmate that borrowed the tablet then refused to give it back to the victim. This refusal made Skoczek angry, which instigated a verbal argument.

Suddenly, Skoczek attacked the victim and began punching him approximately 20 times in the face and body. The victim then stated that he was in fear for his personal safety, so he turned around and pressed the intercom button to alert staff of the altercation. As the victim turned around to press the intercom button, Skoczek began punching him in the back of the head. A short time later, detention staff arrived and separated the two inmates.

The deputy noted that the victim’s left eye socket was severely bruised, his left eyeball was bruised and bloody, he had marks on his collar bone area, and several bloody marks on his right hand. Missoula County Detention Facility Medical Staff sent the victim to a local hospital for further evaluation. The hospital determined that the victim sustained two facial fractures from the incident and that he was referred to a specialist for follow-up treatment.

Skoczek is currently being charged with two separate counts of felony aggravated assault. On September 25, 2021, Skoczek was arrested for assaulting a woman at the Dakota House in Missoula. In that incident, he was charged with aggravated burglary and aggravated assault.
