Missoula County to Dedicate CSKT Flag – Artwork at Ceremony

On Wednesday, February 19, there will be a ceremony in the Missoula County Courthouse in the Sophie Moiese Room for a flag and artwork ceremony.

County Commissioner Dave Strohmaier provided details about the event.

“There will be two special events,” said Strohmaier. “The first will be a flag dedication ceremony. We will be dedicating and installing the flag of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, alongside the U.S. AND State of Montana flags. This is to recognize the fact that we do have a tribal sovereign nation that overlaps with the boundaries of Missoula County, and as we speak right now in the seat of county government are in the aboriginal homelands of the Bitterroot Salish. It’s long overdue that we formally and symbolically recognize the Flathead Nations in our midst.”

Strohmaier said there will be another similar ceremony on Wednesday in the same location.

“We will also be having an art opening,” he said. “This will be something that the Missoula Art Museum will be participating in. We will be featuring the art of a fairly renowned Salish artist and will have a couple of pieces of her artwork in the commissioners meeting room. We would love to have members of the public come out because it will be a great event.”

The event will be Wednesday, February 19 in the Sophie Moiese Room at the Missoula County Courthouse beginning at 2:30 p.m.
