Superintendent Rob Watson has emailed MCPS high school families to share that based on new COVID case counts, the board has agreed that it is safe for student to go back to in-person instruction 5 days per week, as opposed to the 4 they attend now. You'll recall that when students first went back to school during the pandemic, it was two days a week, then they moved to four, that has seemed to be OK and not effect COVID numbers, so now high school students will return to a  5 school days per week schedule.

Here's the plan. Remote learning Mondays will continue now through March 22nd, so until after Spring Break. After that, your students should attend school 5 days per week, with the exception of the following days, which will be remote learning. See the detailed schedule below.

  • March 22nd
  • April 6th -  Tuesday (Due to ACT testing)
  • April 19th
  • May 3rd
  • May 17th

Monday, April 5th is an in-person day, Tuesday, April 6th is a remote learning day as Juniors have ACTs, May 28th and 31st are no-school days for Memorial weekend, and the last day of school will be June 10th, which will be a half day. The bell schedule will not change for the remainder of the year, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. remains in effect. I don't know about you, but as a parent, I love these times, teenagers aren't meant to get up early, their circadian rhythm dictates that they should stay up later and wake up later, it's science. In my opinion, unless you live in a rural area, forcing teens to get up early in the morning is very 18th century.

Also, class periods will still run longer, students will have 3 or 4 classes each day, as opposed to 7 each day. FREE summer school options will begin on June 14th, and finally, MCPS wants to remind you that if your student plans to travel for Spring Break, they should get a COVID test when they return.

Completely off the record and just from the rumor mill, it sounds like some of the high schools may be able to have Prom and in-person graduation ceremonies. I will fill you in when I get confirmation.
