Watch Mavis Staples and Members of Arcade Fire Sing Talking Heads’ ‘Slippery People’
This Sunday, AXS TV will premiere Mavis Staples: I'll Take You There - Celebrating 75 Years, an all-star concert from 2014 held in honor of the 75th birthday of the soul-gospel legend. You can watch her singing Talking Heads' "Slippery People" with Win Butler and Regine Chassagne from Arcade Fire above.
The program is being aired at 10PM Eastern, and in addition to the Arcade Fire singers, it also features Jeff Tweedy, Glen Hansard, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman and more singing songs she made famous, both with her family group, the Staple Singers, and in her solo career. It took place in her hometown of Chicago. On June 2, it's being released as a DVD/two-CD set. You can get full details and pre-order it at Blackbird Presents' website.
Staples has a long history with "Slippery People." She recorded it with the Staple Singers for 1984's Turning Point, their last album. It reached No. 22 on the R&B chart, with David Byrne contributing guitar.
More recently, Staples teamed up with Arcade Fire for "I Give You Power," which was released the day before the inauguration of President Donald Trump, with all proceeds going to benefit the American Civil Liberties Union. "It's never been more important that we stick together and take care of each other," they said in a joint statement.
Arcade Fire have yet to release details of their next album, so it's unknown if "I Give You Power' is included or solely intended as a standalone track. However, the band is scheduled to close out Lollapalooza this summer.
