Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - At approximately 8:54 p.m. on February 2, 2026, Missoula dispatch received a report of a male creating a disturbance by “chasing” down students and asking them for money at the Wye area Town Pump. A Montana Highway Patrol Trooper and Missoula Police Department Officers responded to the scene.

While en route, the trooper received a physical description of the male as well as information that he had gotten into a white Dodge Durango. The trooper also received a license plate number.

The trooper arrived and observed a school bus facing the Town Pump and a white Dodge Durango at the McDonald’s drive-through window with its lights off. The Durango proceeded out of the drive-through and passed the school bus again. The trooper initiated a traffic stop and introduced himself to the driver, who was identified as 57-year-old Schawnn Leggett.

Leggett’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was slow and incoherent. The trooper administered standardized field sobriety tests, which he is trained in scoring and administering, and observed 6/6 possible clues on the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, 8/8 in the walk and turn test, and 4/4 on the one legged stand test. Leggett consented to provide a preliminary breath sample, which showed a breath alcohol concentration of .111.

Then the trooper observed a sunglasses container containing several small baggies, several cut-up straws, and residue of a white crystalline substance on the center console of the Durango. The trooper’s report notes prior impaired driving convictions for Leggett in 1998, 2001, and 2007.
