Montana Gas Prices: Biggest Drop So Far This Year

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Montana gasoline prices have now dropped four weeks in a row. Patrick De Haan is the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy and he provided the current numbers.              

“Average gasoline prices in Montana have fallen 6.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.46 per gallon today,” De Haan said. “Prices in Montana are 11.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand .5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.”            

As of Monday afternoon, many stations in Missoula had their prices set to around $3.49 per gallon.        

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Montana was priced at $3.13 per gallon yesterday while the most expensive was $3.84 per gallon.             

Montana is currently ranked 28th in the U.S. when it comes to the average price of gas, up two spots from last week.           

“The national average price of gasoline has fallen 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.58 per gallon today,” De Haan said. “The national average is down 3.7 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 6.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 4.6 cents in the last week and stands at $3.90 per gallon.”

According to De Haan, we've seen the average gasoline price drop in most states over the last week as refineries finish maintenance and increase output of products like gasoline. 

"With gas prices now nearing a 10-cent drop to the high we saw a few weeks ago, the future looks good as we get closer to Memorial Day; price drops could potentially accelerate after last week's jobs data shows the economy continues to cool off,” De Haan said. “While gas prices stand slightly above where they were last year, I expect most Americans will see prices fall before the holiday weekend, and I'm optimistic the trend could extend into June and beyond.” 

De Haan was excited to say that the worst appears to be behind us.
