Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - The Missoula County Attorney’s Office filed nine new felony complaints this week, which is seven less than last week and significantly lower than the weekly average. Chief Deputy County Attorney Mac Bloom provided the report this week.

“We charged four violent persons crimes and three of those were violent crimes against persons and one of them was a family violence strangulation,” Bloom said. “We charged one endangerment crime, two property crimes, and one drug crime. This has actually been our lowest charging week of the year.”

Bloom said there was a trend in firearm related incidents this week.

“A man shot a firearm inside a residence on Cooley St.,” Bloom said. “I know a lot of us in Montana owned firearms. I certainly do. I like to go out and recreate and hunt and shoot. But we take these cases where people are using firearms very seriously and we often charge a sentencing enhancement if a firearm is used in the commission of a felony. That sentencing enhancement guarantees a mandatory minimum of two years in prison on top of the other sentence for the underlying crime.”

Bloom said that is an effective tool to use to try to curb gun violence. Bloom said they want our community to be safe and to use firearms responsibly.

According to Bloom, there was a trial this week that involved an undercover sting operation.

“Law enforcement posted on social media for pretending to be an underage individual,” Bloom said. “We did get a conviction for sexual abuse of children this week on a bench trial, which means the judge was making the decision on guilt or innocence. We have quite a few trials coming up, multiple sexual offenses coming up and a kidnapping trial coming up in the next couple of weeks.”

If folks are interested in attending those trials, Bloom recommends visiting the Missoula County website. The courts post their calendars every week so you can see what's coming up and those are always open to the public.
