Firefighters Tackle Late Night Garage Blaze On Hastings Avenue
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 18, 2025, at 9:56 a.m., the Missoula Fire Department provided a report about a fire that occurred the night before. Captain Garrett Venters, C-Shift Acting Battalion Chief, has the details.
“On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at approximately 10:04 p.m., Missoula Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 730 Hastings Avenue in Missoula,” said Venters. “The initial report indicated a fire in a residential garage. Upon arrival, Engine 121 located the resident outside the home, who directed crews to a detached garage in the alley. Light smoke was visible upon approach.”
As firefighters advanced to the garage, Venters said heavy smoke was found inside with fire showing along the front right side.

Crews Used a Chainsaw
“Engine 121 crews stretched a hose line and attempted to open the large overhead garage door, which was stuck,” Venters said. “Engine 111 crews used a chainsaw to breach and remove the door, allowing for a direct fire attack. Flames were quickly extinguished, and crews worked to cool remaining hot spots.”
According to Venters, the contents of the garage were heavily damaged, with most items melted or charred.
“While suppression continued, ladder truck 148 and engine 111 crews entered the main residence to check for fire extension,” Venters said. “No smoke was found on the main level. However, light smoke was observed in the attic. Further inspection revealed a vent hole connecting the garage to the attic, through which smoke and heat had traveled.”

Venters said no active fire was located in the attic, and conditions stabilized after ventilation and monitoring.
“No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported,” Venters said. “A fire investigator has been assigned to the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”
