Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Applications and nominations for Montana’s first ever FBI Citizens Academy are being accepted now through April 18.

I spoke to FBI Community Outreach Specialist Rebecca Leary this week about the first even opportunity for Montanans to obtain a close-up look at what the FBI does and how it operates in Montana.

Applications for the First Ever FBI Citizens Academy are Available

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people in Montana to learn what the FBI is all about,” began Leary. “It's also an opportunity for them to learn what we do, what kinds of crimes we investigate, how we investigate those crimes, and what we're doing to connect with our communities.”

Special Agent from the Salt Lake City FBI Field Office Sandra Barker emphasized the importance of getting Montana residents involved in assisting the federal agency.

The FBI Seeks the Public's Input so 'If you see Something Say Something'

“The main point is we can't do our job without the help of the public,” said Barker. “We expect the public to be our eyes and ears sometimes so that we can see what's going on in our communities, and so we hope that these participants become ambassadors for the FBI and so if they're aware of anything, they can spread the word of ‘Hey, if you see something, say something’, call the FBI and report it.”

The academy will take place in Helena in July. Leary provided more specifics.

“It will actually be the last two weeks of July starting July 23rd, and it will take place at the Federal Building in Helena, Montana. Attendees will have to accommodate their own lodging and transportation. There will be a light snack during (each day of) the event but we're not going to be able to provide a full meal.”

Leary provided details on how to register for the first ever Montana FBI Academy.

“You can go on to the Salt Lake City FBI website, and we have a link to a nomination form there,” she said. “They will fill out the nomination form, and registration closes on April 18. Then, two to three weeks after that date we'll announce the individuals who have been chosen to attend our Citizens Academy.”
