An accidental fall. Insufficient clothing for sudden Inclement weather. Foul play. Wild animal attack.

There is much speculation about what might have happened. But no answers.

Now that winter has for the most part retreated and there is more activity in the area of concern, authorities are set to resume a search that hopefully brings some answers, and some closure for family and friends.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office tells us that as more and more people venture outside to enjoy our spring weather, the office is requesting assistance from hunters and hikers who explore the New World Gulch/Bear Canyon area. David Butzin, a youthful 63-year-old and avid outdoorsman, was reported missing on November 25 of 2024. The last time anyone can recall contact with him was November 10.

Mr. Butzin’s vehicle was located at the New World Gulch Bear Canyon area southeast of Bozeman on November 26, in the New World Gulch/Bear Canyon area. Gallatin County Search and Rescue exhausted all search efforts at that time. Acquaintances say It was common for him to adventure off-trail. It was also typical of him to not make any contact with friends or family for extended periods of time.

There are currently no leads to his whereabouts beyond the mentioned area. It is unknown what type of clothing Mr. Butzin was wearing when he went missing, or what provisions he might have brought along.

If you find yourself in this area, please keep an eye out for anything that may help us in locating Mr. Butzin. Please contact Gallatin County Communications (non-emergency) at 406-582-2100.
