National Agriculture Day was Tuesday, March 18. And the state's director shined the spotlight on a Missoula farm.

In late January of this year, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte appointed Jillien Streit as the new director of the Montana Department of Agriculture. And one her stops this week was to recognize the contributions to the agriculture industry made by Missoula's very own Turner Farms.

The Northern Ag Network tells us that Director Streit and representatives from the Montana Department of Agriculture continued their focus on highlighting the diversity in Montana’s agricultural ecosystem this week, with a visit to Turner Farms, located on South Third Street West. Director Streit says she is a a big believer that diversification of income streams is key to the success of a family farm.

Learning and telling the amazing success story of how families like the Turners have integrated and changed practices to focus on feeding their local community is worthy of such recognition for being a vital part of an agricultural ecosystem in Montana.  The Turners are first generation farmers that are committed to promoting local agriculture and providing their local community with the ability to have a connection to their food.

The Turners started Turner Farms in 2006 and have since then grown into beef, pork, lamb, and more. In combination with their farm produce and meat offerings, Turner Farms provides on-farm camps for kids, an event space, a pumpkin patch, and a farm store. They put on community events numerous times each year. And they love to be able to offer a farm store that provides customers with on-the-farm access to fresh produce, farm-raised beef, pork, lamb and other farm goods.

Congratulations to the family for this well-deserved statewide recognition. You can find out more about Turner Farms here.
