Trace’s Tackle Box: A Little Montana Boy’s Heartwarming Legacy
The loss of a small child is devastating. But even at a young age, his memory will live on in the hearts of fellow lovers of fishing. Get a box of tissues and read on.
TRACE'S TACKLE BOX
Trace Louis Hilburn loved the outdoors. Whether he was fishing from the shores of Montana's Fort Peck Reservoir, riding in the boat, catching his first fish, exploring around the campground, or simply spending time with family near the water, he found joy in every adventure.
Sadly, Trace was taken from this earth at the age of 4.
One of Trace’s favorite things was being outside with the people he loved. His enthusiasm was contagious, his smile unforgettable, and his excitement for even the smallest catch reminded those around him what truly mattered.
CLINIC AND COMMUNITY
A kids' fishing clinic was organized and led by Kayla, Trace’s mother, along with the owners of the Lakeridge Lodging and Bait Shop, Eddie and Carrie Mindt, Trace’s grandparents.
What began as a desire to honor Trace’s memory grew into an opportunity to serve children and families throughout the community. Following the loss of her son, Kayla chose to channel her grief into something positive—creating opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and experience the same love for the outdoors that Trace carried with him every day.

HOW IT ALL CAME TOGETHER
Working alongside her parents, Kayla brought together local businesses, volunteers, anglers, and community members to make the inaugural Trace’s Tackle Box Kids' Fishing Clinic a reality.
Every fishing rod handed to a child, every knot tied, every lesson shared, and every memory created through the clinic reflects the simple joy Trace found in the outdoors. Through this program, his love of fishing continues to inspire new generations of young anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
The clinic was held Sunday, May 31. While the weather prevented fishing on the day of the clinic, every child left with a rod, reel, loaded tackle box, new skills, and a future fishing trip waiting to happen. For the families who attended and the volunteers who helped, that outcome felt like exactly the kind of day Trace would have loved.
The turnout and the immense support from local individuals and businesses around the Fort Peck community was astounding.
It sounds like Trace's Tackle Box is well on its way to being an annual event in his memory.
