This Unique Montana Feature Found Nowhere Else in World
BUTTE, MT - What's your favorite part about Montana? Is it the lovely people that roam the desolate lands, ranch to ranch, highway to highway? Is it the wildlife that are found in every facet of our beautiful state, from Bald Eagles gliding across the sky to buffalo combing the hillside landscapes? Or perhaps your favorite part are the mountains that we're always enveloped by, sometimes creating what I call the "snow globe effect": 360 degree mountain ranges along the horizon, creating the feeling that you're in a snow globe. If I know you, and I think I do, it's probably all three and much, much more.
That's what's so cool about being a resident in Montana. We are constantly surrounded by the best the world has to offer, which is easy to get lost in (and where I find myself a lot of the time). In fact, I was recently made aware of one of the coolest geological features of Montana, and it has been hiding right under my nose the whole time. Have you heard about the significance of Triple Divide Peak in Glacier National Park?
I hope you share with me some incredible memories of hiking or backpacking out in Glacier. I still remember my first experience out in the backcountry near Logging Lake: there really is nothing like it. But I'm not talking about the spectacular hiking it offers, or the magnificent views it boasts for those who make it to the top that makes Triple Divide Peak so unique. No, I'm talking about one specific feature of the mountain that is the only of its kind in the entire world. Can you guess what it is? The name is a hint.
Well, Triple Divide Peak in Glacier National Park in Montana is unique in the fact that it serves as a triple divide point for waters that flow into the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean (via the Gulf of Mexico), and the Arctic Ocean (via Hudson Bay). This means that a single raindrop falling on the summit of Triple Divide Peak can embark on three vastly different journeys, each contributing to a distant aquatic ecosystem. Take a look below:
The significance of Triple Divide Peak extends beyond its hydrological importance and uniqueness. It is a natural showcase of the interconnectedness of natural systems. And according to my research, there is not a single other place on Earth that serves three separate oceans with water. Pretty crazy, right? Just another reason to love the state we live in.
