The most burglarized place in Montana isn’t Billings, Missoula, or even Great Falls. According to a new report from SafeWise, it’s tiny St. Ignatius. The beautiful little town in the Flathead Valley has a population of less than 1,000. If you’ve passed through, you know. It’s quiet. Except for the occasional barks from a reservation dog.

On average, burglaries cost victims $6,000 in America, and only 27% of people have a home security system. Which might explain a lot. Because in Montana, we have this thing about not locking our doors. It’s kind of our unofficial state motto: “Come on in, the coffee’s on.”

Small Town, Big Numbers

St. Ignatius taking the top spot even surprised me. You’d think a bigger town like Bozeman, Great Falls, or Kalispell. Places with their tourists, traffic, and new subdivisions would be easier targets. But maybe that’s the point. In small towns, everyone knows who has the good stuff, and nobody’s got cameras to prove it.

A third of the most burglarized towns in America have populations under 1,000, according to SafeWise. So St. Ignatius is in interesting company. In neighboring states like Idaho and North Dakota, Idaho Falls and Fargo claimed their states’ top spots. Compared to them, St. Ignatius feels like more than just a stop on the way to Flathead Lake.

The Montana Way

It’s hard to picture masked burglars sneaking through St. Ignatius, but here we are. No wonder the gas station is always sold out of ski masks. Maybe it’s boredom. Maybe it’s bad luck. Or maybe it’s just a reminder that all Montanans should use a deadbolt.
