Last month, Green Day's members took a musical tour of the rock and punk canons when their cover band the Coverups rocked the 40th Street Block Party in Oakland, California, with a rare performance.

In the Coverups, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong stays centerstage while bassist Mike Dirnt handles electric guitar. The group also features Green Day touring member Jason White. "OK, we started a cover band, and we're called the Coverups," Armstrong announced before the band dug into their lengthy set on Telegraph Avenue. As Billboard reported, the group was launched last year in San Francisco with audio engineer Chris Dugan on drums and tour manager Bill Schneider on bass. In January, a guitar used at a Coverups gig was included among some of Green Day's items sold on Reverb.

During the July concert, the band tackled classic songs by Nirvana, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Misfits, the Ramones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and more, as the NME noted.

Fans can hope the block party performance has members thinking of their next move in Green Day, as Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool began teasing renewed studio activity this summer.
