Grandaddy bassist Kevin Garcia has passed away at the age of 41 after suffering what's being described as a "massive stroke."

The group shared the news of Garcia's death with a deeply felt post that admits up front "there are no accurate words to express" what they're going through — and then goes on to offer a powerful eulogy for their late bandmate.

"Kevin started playing with Grandaddy when he was 15. He was an actual angel," reads the post in part. "He navigated life with a grace, a generosity and a kindness that was utterly unique. And contagious. He is loved so deeply by so many."

Noting that Garcia died "surrounded by his closest friends and family" in the band's hometown of Modesto, Calif., the post concludes by promising, "We'll have more to say in the days ahead. Right now the four of us are grieving together."

Garcia's sudden passing comes just weeks after the release of Last Place, Grandaddy's fifth LP and first in over a decade. The group spent more than five years apart after 2006's Just Like the Fambly Cat, and its eventual reunion was a slow process starting with a handful of live dates in 2012.

Garcia is survived by his wife Sandra and their two children, as well as his parents, two brothers, and grandmother. A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help the family defray some of the looming costs associated with his medical care and burial; if you'd like to donate, you can do so here.
