The cold weather hastens some of the migration of birds from the north to the south - some of that movement through the Bitterroot Valley.

There is a resident population of Canada Geese that winters in Western Montana, with access to flowing water. Often, you can see them at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge or in the riverbottoms along the Bitterroot River.

But some of the birds are just passing by. The waves of Canada Geese and Snow Geese have been seen flying overhead. Day and night, you can hear the honking of the long distance fliers.
