Bitterroot Outdoor Journal – G’bye Hummers

Hummingbirds are scarce this time of year, according to Bob Danley of KLYQ's Bitterroot Outdoor Journal. He's noticed some young ones last week, but migration has been happening. However, the dragonflies are still around. He saw a Shadow Darner along the Bitterroot River. The photo (see above) is of a female laying eggs. They are active until October and are active in the shade at dusk. Butterflies are around, too. (see photo below) The Mylitta Crescent has only an inch-and-a-half wingspan and is seen near streams, looking for thistles and knapweed.

Hawks are leaving for the south and mid-afternoon is the best time see them soaring and circling in the thermals. There should be lots of opportunities to see hawks into early October. Wildflowers are done for the year, except for the berries. Don't eat the berries! The Baneberry, for instance, is poisonous. But they are pretty.
