It was a scary, spectacular forest fire at the end of July, 2016. The Roaring Lion Fire blew up within a few hours to burn thousands of acres and destroy homes near the mouth of the canyon.

Eight months after that fire, in late April 2017, I visited farther up the canyon, where the Roaring Lion Trailhead is located.

A beautiful little cedar grove was always a magnet for my visits through the years.

Sadly, that grove burned in the initial hours of the forest fire.

Here's what I saw in April, along with some "before and after" photos of that small section of the Bitterroot National Forest.

And, yes, growth is returning to the blackened landscape.
