Watch Queens of the Stone Age Add a String Section to Live ‘Villains of Circumstance’

Josh Homme and Dean Fertita teamed up with a string section to perform Queens of the Stone Age’s track “Villains of Circumstance” live on the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland show last night (Oct 3). Watch the performance above.

The song appears on new QOTSA album Villains, which was released in August after Homme admitted he’d pushed himself to complete the project. “At the end of the day, this is just a musical way to explain a lifetime,” he said before its launch. “So the most important record I’m making is the one I’m working on. For the lack of a better term, I bet my life on it. If you don’t risk anything, you’re not gonna get anything. I don’t want to copy myself, I just want to take another chance at it. It keeps it always exciting that way.”

But he rejected the suggestion that the follow-up to 2013’s …Like Clockwork had a political theme at its heart. “It has nothing to do with [Donald] Trump or any of that s—,” he states. “It’s simply 1) a word that looks fantastic and 2) a comment on the three versions of every scenario: yours, mine and what actually happened… Everyone needs someone or something to rail against – their villain – same as it ever was. You can’t control that. The only thing you can really control is when you let go.”

QOTSA have confirmed that the album-opening “Feet Don’t Fail Me” will the next single to be released from Villains. Homme is set to make an appearance on the BBC’s CBeebies children’s channel on Oct. 6 (Friday). The band continue a U.S. tour during October before heading to Europe and the U.K. in November, with a run of South American dates to follow in February and March next year.
