Primus Reveal Colorful Lyric Video for ‘The Seven’

Ever since Les Claypool revealed that Primus‘ latest album The Desaturating Seven drew inspiration from the trippy 1978 book The Rainbow Goblins, you probably figured we’d eventually be in for some interesting visuals … and you’d be correct. The band just unleashed a new lyric video for their lead song “The Seven” off the upcoming disc.

Speaking with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Claypool stated, “I remember being incredibly impressed with the artwork and the storyline and the content and the message, and I thought, ‘Wow, this would make a great piece of music.’” What fans first heard back in May when the band premiered the song at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre was a dominant gyrating bass line invoking a bit of a psychedelic circus feel.

“I would look at the artwork and read the lyrics, and it’s very difficult to sing about goblins and rainbows and not have it come off being a little cornball. So I was tiptoeing the line of not necessarily being literal, but referring to elements of the story and using it more as a metaphor, when I could,” said Claypool of the song.

As for the lyric video, it stays pretty close to what you would expect from a ’70s-era storybook, with psychedelic visuals featuring the colorful “desaturating seven” and their adventures. See the clip above.

Primus’ The Desaturating Seven album is due Sept. 29 and you can currently pre-order the disc here.
