Odds are Moby isn't the first name you think of when it comes to hardcore punk. In fact, the musician himself recently found some humor in his appearance with Rise Against at a recent surprise show in Simi Valley, Calif. where he teamed up with the band to cover a Minor Threat song.

"I'm so ashamed I need a lyric sheet," Moby can be heard uttering between songs with Tim McIlrath and crew. "I've heard it a 1000 times, but I'm so old I need a lyric sheet. I should be reading with bifocals." But with lyric sheet in hand and an enthusiastic crowd mere inches in front of him with no stage barriers, Moby let loose with his best Ian MacKaye impression, channeling the pure chaotic energy of "In My Eyes" for the audience.

The performance was a surprise gig at the Skate Lab in Simi Valley on Monday (Oct. 1), where Rise Against were the featured performers. Moby also stuck around to perform Wire's "12XU" (which was later covered by Minor Threat) and Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown" with the group, but only footage of "In My Eyes" captured by Reel Negative in the video above has surfaced from the show.

Though Moby is mostly known for his work in the electronic and pop worlds, he actually played in the hardcore punk outfit Vatican Commandos in the '80s and was a guitarist for alternative band Ultra Vivid Scene before his music career took him other directions.

Rise Against played a 14-song set for those in attendance, with staples like "Give It All," "Ready to Fall," "Savior" and the show-closing "Prayer for the Refugee" all making the cut. However, they mixed it up a bit for the fans, pulling out a number of punk-infused covers from the Ramones, Descendents, Misfits and Youth of Today, with their performance of Youth of Today's "Break Down the Walls" featured in the Reel Negative-captured video below.

The band has spent the better part of the last two years promoting their Wolves album. Only a few dates currently populate their tour schedule. See where they're playing here.
