Just after 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Missoula Police received a call about a man asleep at the wheel of his car with the engine running in a local parking lot. According to Missoula Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh, that nap ended up drawing felony charges.

"Officers were called to the 4800 block of North Reserve Street where a complainant had observed a lone male seated in a vehicle that was running and he appeared to be passed out," Welsh said. "Officers arrived and tried to make contact with the male and they noticed several empty alcohol containers in the vehicle... it looks like it was hard liquor in this case."

The man had been arrested for DUI at least three times before, so he is facing a felony charge this time, but his response to the officers drew more charges.

"Eventually they were able to wake the man, who was identified as 38-year-old Jason Welch," Welsh said. "Mr. Welch was eventually arrested for DUI and the officers learned that this is not his first. At the time that officers informed Mr. Welch that he was under arrest  he began to resist their efforts when they tried to put handcuffs on him."

Mr. Welch refused to blow into a breathalyzer and was taken to the hospital to check his Blood Alcohol Content where he fought with police a second time and refused to cooperate.  Apparently no one was injured during the two struggles, but Welch is facing misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and obstructing a peace officer as a result. Welch was released from jail less than three hours after he arrived.
