Word about the closure of the Indy spread like wildfire this morning after employees received an email telling them not to come to work.

In typical Missoula fashion, a plan was quickly concocted to gather at the Missoulian building this afternoon to show support for the Indy, it's staff and what the free paper stands for in our community.

According to the Western Montana Democratic Socialists of America:

Our message is simple and clear - this community values the free and independent thinking, writing and reporting of The Independent.
Consequently, we demand that Lee Enterprises and Matt Gibson negotiate with the Independent employees in an effort to keep the Indy open. Respect this community's call for independent journalism. Respect the employees of The Independent.
We MUST have a large turnout on the doors of the Missoulian. Today, 4:30-7:30pm, come when you can. Petitions, both on-line and in person will be available.
Please share this event widely, particularly with other groups who can get it to their members. This is a community collaboration.

The peaceful gathering will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 this afternoon at 500 South Higgins.

The Missoula Independent and Missoulian are owned by Lee Enterprises, a company that owns most of the newspapers in Montana.
