Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and that means the Bitterroot National Forest is preparing for a large number of campers. Spokesman Tod McKay explains.

“Our recreational staff has been out working for several weeks getting the campgrounds looking good, of course turning on the water systems and getting everything ready for a busy weekend,” said McKay. “This is the start of the summer camping season. We are expecting lots of folks out in the forest and we are looking forward to hosting them.”

McKay says creeks and streams are still really high and fast this time of year, which can be very dangerous.

“A lot of those are located next to campgrounds and campsites,” McKay. “The safety message this year, kind of every year on Memorial Day, but certainly this year, is please be cautious around flowing water especially at creek crossings. It is important to really pay attention because with the warm weather they can change pretty rapidly.”

According to McKay, all 26 campgrounds on the Bitterroot National Forest are open and he expects them all to be filled this holiday weekend.
